Mechanical traction

A steady, controlled pull on the neck or low back using a traction unit.

What it is

Mechanical traction applies a steady stretch to the spine using a machine. It can be set for the neck or the low back.

It is often added to a chiropractic visit to help the muscles and joints around the spine relax before or after an adjustment.

Who it may help

  • People with stiffness in the neck or low back
  • People whose pain eases when they stretch or hang from a bar
  • People who sit for long hours

Every patient is different. Dr. Hua will tell you after the exam whether this is a good fit for you.

What a session is like

You lie on a table and a padded strap is fitted around your neck or hips.

The unit pulls gently and steadily for about 10 to 15 minutes. You can ask for the setting to be lowered at any time.

Questions patients ask

How is this different from spinal decompression?
Traction usually uses a steadier pull. Decompression uses a computer to vary the pull through each cycle. Dr. Hua chooses between them based on your exam.
Will I be sore afterward?
Some people feel a little stiff the next day. That usually passes quickly. Let us know if it does not.
Can I drive after traction?
Yes. Most patients drive themselves home or back to work.
