Electroacupuncture

Acupuncture with a mild electrical current passed between pairs of needles.

What it is

Electroacupuncture starts the same way as regular acupuncture. Then small clips connect pairs of needles to a device that sends a mild, adjustable electrical pulse between them.

It is a way of stimulating the points steadily for the length of the session instead of by hand.

Who it may help

  • People with muscle tightness in the back, hips, or shoulders
  • People who have had acupuncture before and want to try a stronger stimulation

Every patient is different. Dr. Hua will tell you after the exam whether this is a good fit for you.

What a session is like

Needles are placed first. Then the clips are attached and the current is turned up slowly until you feel a light tapping or buzzing.

The session runs about 20 minutes. You control the level. Say the word and it is turned down.

Questions patients ask

Is electroacupuncture safe?
It is generally well tolerated. It is not used for people with pacemakers or certain other implanted devices, and it is used with care during pregnancy. Tell us about any devices or conditions before your visit.
Will it shock me?
No. The current is very low. It feels like a steady tapping or tingling and stays at a level you are comfortable with.
How is it different from e-stim?
E-stim uses pads on the skin with no needles. Electroacupuncture sends the current through acupuncture needles.
